PERAK - NORTHERN REGION OF PENINSULAR MALAYSIA

GOPENG : Gua Tempurung (Cave)

A familiar sight on the west side of the North South Expressway as you approach lpoh from the south is a series of massive limestone hills with sheer cliffs. These hills form an imposing looking landscape just before you exit the highway at Gopeng.

Called Gunung Gajah and Gunung Tempurung, the two main limestone massifs here harbour an incredible underworld passageway, the largest of such in the peninsula. The Gua Tempurung cave with as amazing limestone formations is now accessible to everyone. More than three km long, part of a has been developed as a show cave with lighted interior and walkways. A small river flows 1.6 km through the hill in the cave passage, where there are three very large chambers offering close views of some spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.

Gua Tempurung is currently under the care of APT Consortium Sdn Bhd , which also offers a range of guided tours of different lengths and difficulty. There are short tours that provide basic information of the cave and will take you through the passage and as main chambers via the safety and convenience of a walkway and platforms.

For the more adventurous, longer tours taking up to three and a half hours will take you through an underground river right to the end of the cave.

The types of tours you get here come in different names such as the Catwalk Tour lasting about 40 minutes, Top Of The World that starts from the entrance to the Top of The World Cavern, Catwalk and River Adventure with its strenuous two and a half hour walk including trudging in the river and mud in some parts, and the Grand Tour, which is a complete journey from the entrance with full-length underground river adventure.

Gua Tempurung is located 7km after the Gopeng toll. After exiting the North South Expressway, turn left and drive five km in the direction towards KL before you reach a signboard on the left that directs you to the cave.

You will pass a village, former tin mining land and ponds before you reach he cave area. The area around the cave has adequate facilities for parking and there is a camping area. There are washrooms, rest shades, and food stalls too.
