HULU TERENGGANU

Hulu Terengganu is the biggest district and the only land locked.  It borders with Kelantan, Pahang and part of Hulu Terengganu is actually included in Malaysia's Taman Negara (National Park).  Although most people enter the Taman Negara through Kuala Tembeling, Pahang, Tanjong Mentong in Tasik Kenyir is actually the nearest entry point into Taman Negara. Hulu Terengganu District boasts vast virgin rainforests which offers diverse flora and fauna.  The ecosystem is really unique because it has remained untouched for millions years. Here, there are plenty of outdoor activities to please even the least adventurous.  One can engage in jungle trekking, camping, sport fishing, mountaineering, mountain biking, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, caving, bird watching as well as a night safaris.

HISTORY

It is here in Hulu Terengganu that the Batu Bersurat (Inscribed Stone) was found.  The artifact which dated 1303 AD or 702 Hijriah which proves the acceptance of Islam by the local communities and the earliest Islamic government was found here in Terengganu.  The marginates Melaka by 100 years.  Kuala Berang is he district's commercial and administrative centre.  From Chinese historical records, it is discovered that the name 'Fo-lo-an' refers to Kuala Berang, a trading post with commercial link with its regional neighbours. Some artifacts found in Hulu Terengganu shows that ships from as far as China and India anchored in Kuala Berang.  Time passes and due to natural built up of sand banks, Kuala Berang is only accessible to small boats.
