BEACHES OF JOHOR

 

Whatever the purpose for heading to the beach, Johor has a string of 17 beaches. Two of them are located in the middle of Johor Bahru city. To the north-west in the districts of Pontian and Batu Pahat are two other beaches. The premier beaches are found in the eastern shoreline of Johor in the districts of Mersing and Kota Tinggi.

 
 

STULANG LAUT BEACH - Johor Bahru

 

This is a city beach near the Duty Free Zone (DFZ). Visitors go there in the evening to enjoy the soothing breeze and to relax especially after a sumptuous meal.

Facilities

The nearby DFZ is an integrated area with a modern hotel, a duty-free shopping centre and a floating entertainment hub with a seafood restaurant, karaoke and a discotheque. It also houses an international ferry terminal. It is also a popular berthing place for yacht.

 

Activities and Attractions

Sea sports, in particular windsurfing, is popular during the day. At night, it is turned into a gastronomic centre and the place for people to relax under the cool breeze or enjoy an evening stroll.

 

Getting There

Going there by taxi is the best choice, as taxies are easily available. Ask the taxi driver to take you to Stulang Laut or Duty Free Zone.

 
 

LIDO BEACH - Johor Bahru

This city beach provides an alternative for city dwellers to spend their evenings. It is the perfect spot for a magnificent sunset sight and an evening stroll. Fishing and swimming are, however not permitted.

 

Facilities

Car parks, benches and rest shades are provided. There are two food courts and a restaurant that cater local and delicious seafood. There is a floating station, known as Rumah Rakit that offers facilities for sea sports.

 

Activities and Attractions

During the day, visitors tend to be attracted to the sea sports like boating, boat ride, kayaking, canoeing, wind surfing at Rumah Rakit. Sunset watching, evening stroll and sea breezing in the evening are local favourites. Many also swarm this area for food. Restaurants and food courts, mobile hawkers on vans are additional attractions.

 

Getting There

Going there by taxi from Johor Bahru city centre is the best choice. If you prefer to take a leisure walk from the city centre, just follow the pedestrian path along the straits for about 2km.

 
 

RAMBAH BEACH - Pontian

This is a popular spot for bird lovers to gather and share their interesting experiences together. It is also the site for bird singing competition. It is close to Pulau Pisang and Kukup fishing village.

 

Facilities

Car parks, food stalls, toilets and rest shades.

 

Activities and Attractions

Relaxation, fishing, picnicking, beach games and migratory birds watching are the main activities. Associated activities include a visit to Tanjung Piai, the southern most tip of the Mainland Asia and to enjoy sea food in Kukup. There is also a Bugis Museum nearby.

 

Getting There

To get there, head for Pontian Kechil and travel south about 8km to reach the beach.

 
 

PUNGGOR BEACH - Batu Pahat

This sandy beach, lined with coconut trees, is also on the Johor?s west coast, facing the Straits of Malacca. It is how ever unsuitable for swimming.

 

Facilities

These include a food court and food stalls selling local Malay food. There are also shaded rest areas and toilets.

 

Activities and Attractions

Picnicking, beach games and leisure stroll to enjoy the cool sea breeze are the main activities.

 

Getting There

To get there head for Batu Pahat town or Pontian Kechil town. From Batu Pahat travel south-east for about 24km and turn right for another 2km to reach the beach. From Pontian Kechil travel northwest for about 42km and then turn left for another 2km.

 
 

MINYAK BEKU BEACH - Batu Pahat

The beach is at the river mouth of Batu Pahat facing Pulau Sialu. This rocky beach is not suitable for swimming but it is an ideal place relaxation or to enjoy sea breeze. State level fishing competition was held here. An old well Perigi Batu Pahat is located just beside the beach. Nearby is an abandoned quarry, two villages and three light houses.

 

Facilities

Food stalls operated by the locals during peak seasons and in the evenings.

 

Activities and Attractions

Fishing, relaxation and sea breezing are the main activities. Visit the Orang Asli village and the Chinese fishing village and see their different lifestyles. In Kampung Segenting, there is a very popular Taoist temple.

 

Getting There

To get there head for Batu Pahat town. The beach is about 8km from the town.

 
 

PENYABONG BEACH - Mersing

This sandy beach is popular for day trips and weekend retreats. Its close proximity to Malay villages offer opportunity for a glimpse of rural lifestyle.

 

Facilities

There are several resorts. One is equipped with modern facilities that include a swimming pool. A sea sports centre rents out equipment for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. During weekends and public holidays local folks set up food stalls offering local delicacies.

 

Activities and Attractions

Picnicking, swimming, boating, beach games, island hopping and fishing are the main activities.

 

Getting There

To get there head for Mersing town and then travel north to Endau fishing village. Before Endau about 32km from Mersing town turn right for another 13km to Penyabong fishing village which is near the beach.

 
 

AIR PAPAN BEACH - Mersing

The beach is shallow and sandy facing Pulau Setindan. It is a popular beach destination for the locals and day trippers. It is also a popular spot for fishing and fishing competition.

 

Facilities

There are two rows of food outlets offering local food, drinks and snack. Some shops offer T-shirts, beach wears and souvenirs for sale. During peak seasons, local folks have additional food and drinks to sell to visitors. Parking spaces are provided for a small fee during weekends and public holidays. Vendors of sea sports equipment offering rental services. There are few resorts offering chalet facilities. Public toilets and bathing facilities are also available for a small fee.

 

Activities and Attractions

Beach games, swimming, boating and picnicking are the main activities. The beach is equipped for group activities like motivational trainings, family days and family retreats.

 

Getting There

To get there head for Mersing town and travel up north for another 9km. Then turn right, passing through paddy fields for 5km.

 
 

TELUK BUIH BEACH - Mersing

This beach, also known as Bubble Bay is a quiet beach and is ideal for those who seek peace and privacy. It is close to Pulau Setindan.

 

Facilities

There is one resort with chalets and a restaurant offering local, Thai and seafood barbeque. It is also provides toilet and shower facilities for a small fee. Boat rental can be arranged.

 

Activities and Attractions

Other than swimming, beach games, fishing trips, island jungle trekking in Pulau Setindan and bird watching are other attractions.

 

Getting There

To get there head Mersing town and travel up north for another 9km. Then turn right passing through paddy fields for 3km and turn right again for another ?km.

 
 

TENGLU BEACH - Mersing

A beach with historical value as Johor?s popular traditional Malay dance, the Zapin Tenglu, originated from the fishing village here. Pulau Setindan is in front of the beach.

 

Facilities

There are two resorts offering budget accommodation in the form of A-frame and chalets. Each resort has its own restaurant serving Malay food. There are meeting rooms available. There is a mosque near the resorts.

 

Activities and Attractions

Beach games, fishing, island hopping, bird watching and istand jungle trekking at Pulau Setindan are the main attractions. In appropriate season, crab catching is an interesting indulgence for visitors.

 

Getting There

To get there, head for Mersing town travel up north for another 7km. Then turn right for 1km.

 
 

TANJUNG LEMAN BEACH - Mersing

This unspoilt beach offers a good view of several popular islands off the coast of Mersing including Pulau Tinggi and Pulau Sibu. The beach is shallow, sandy and well shaded by rows of coconut trees. There are patches of rocks that offer contrasting views and sites for photography. It is a good stopover retreat for those who are going to the islands resorts via Tanjung Leman jetty.

 

Facilities

The single resort offers chalets, a restaurant, karaoke and sea sports services. The resort manages the campsites there.

 

Activities and Attractions

A good spot for group activities as it is less crowded and has good rural ambience. This is in addition to the usual beach activities like swimming and picnicking. Visitors could go island hopping as well.

 

Getting There

To get there, head for Mersing town or Kota Tinggi town. From Mersing town travel south along the trunk road. About 44km from Mersing town turn left. The road passes through an oil palm plantation is narrow and winding in certain parts. From Kota Tinggi town travel north for 48km and turn right to the same junction mentioned above.

 
 

TELUK MAHKOTA BEACH - Kota Tinggi

This 10km stretch of sandy beach also known as Jason Bay offers beautiful rural ambience. The beach is relatively quiet and therefore is ideal for retreats and group activities.

 

Facilities

There are several resorts offering accommodation from budget to mid-range. Lodges are also available.

 

Activities and Attractions

Swimming, beach games and sea sports are the major attractions. Fishing trips could be arranged. There is small handicraft shop that sells sea shell based souvenirs. Visitors can also learn how to make the souvenirs. About 6km away from the beach is Tanjung Sedili town with a jetty that allows visitors to take a boat ride to Kampung Tanjung Sedili Besar. The kampung has a beautiful mosque. The jetty area is an attraction by itself with boats berthing in the evening. The fish collection centre is another spot to visit to understand how fish and other catches from the sea are collected and distributed.

 

Getting There

To get there head for Kota Tinggi town or Mersing town. From Kota Tinggi town travel north for about 13km then turn right for another 23km. Turn right for about 2km is Teluk Mahkota beach. From Mersing town move south for 79km then turn left for 25km to the beach.

 
 

TELUK ENDAU BEACH - Kota Tinggi

This is a newly discovered sandy beach which promises serenity and tranquility.

 

Facilities

Car park, rest shades and wells for fresh water.

 

Activities and Attractions

Picnicking and beach activities or sun bathing are major attractions here.

 

Getting There

To get there, head for Kota Tinggi town or Mersing town. From Kota Tinggi town travel north for about 13km then turn right for another 23km. Turn right for about 13km where you will pass by Teluk Mahkota before reaching Teluk Endau beach. From Mersing town move south for about 74km the turn left for another 23km. Turn right again for about 13km passing by Teluk Mahkota beach to reach Teluk Endau beach.

 
 

TANJUNG BALAU BEACH - Kota Tinggi

The beach is situated next to a planned fishing village with rocks protruding from the water at several parts of the sea. The sandy shore and the shady casuarinas lining the beach make it ideal for picnicking and to enjoy the sea breeze. Nearby is the famous Tanjung Balau Fisherman Museum.

 

Facilities

Car parks, food courts, toilets, shower rooms, surau (mosque) and chalets are the facilities. A souvenir centre offers T-shirts, beach wears and souvenirs for sale.

 

Activities and Attractions

Picnicking, canoeing, kayaking and beach games are the main facilities to indulge in. A visit to the Fisherman Museum is a must. A leisure walk around the planned fishing village should also be included in the tour itinerary.

 

Getting There

To get to Tanjung Balau head for Kota Tinggi town and travel for 47km then turn left near Petronas fuel station. From the junction travel for another 5km. At the first roundabout turn left (at 9 o?clock) and after traveling for another 9km at the next roundabout turn right (at 3 o?clock). About 1km from the second roundabout is Tanjung Balau beach.

 
 

BATU LAYAR BEACH - Kota Tinggi

This is a secluded and quiet sandy beach with basic facilities. Certain parts of the beach are rocky.

 

Facilities

There is a resort that has chalets, dormitory, meeting rooms, a seafood restaurant, barbeque facilities and campsites.

 

Activities and Attractions

Picnicking, swimming and beach games are the main attractions.

 

Getting There

To get to Batu Layar Beach head for Kota Tinggi town and travel for 47km then turn left near Petronas fuel station. From the junction travel for another 5km. At the first roundabout turn right (at 3 o?clock) and travel for 16km then turn left for another 2km to reach Batu Layar Beach.

 
 

TELUK PUGGAI BEACH - Kota Tinggi

A small and quiet sandy beach with kampung ambience that is patronised by the guests of the resorts here. Nearby is a Malay fishing village.

 

Facilities

The resorts provide chalets and camping sites. Meals can be served on request.

 

Activities and Attractions

Fishing, swimming and camping are the main attractions. Observe the culture-rich kampung lifestyle.

 

Getting There

To get to Teluk Punggai Beach head for Kota Tinggi town and travel for 47km then turn left near Petronas fuel station and travel for about 5km to a roundabout. Turn right at 3 o?clock and travel for 19km to reach Teluk Punggai Beach.

 
 

TELUK RAMUNIA BEACH - Kota Tinggi

A quiet beach in an area known for the production of bauxite. There are several Malay kampung near the beach.

 

Facilities

Several resorts cater a range of budget to mid-range accommodations with meeting facilities and shower rooms.

 

Activities and Attractions

Camping, fishing, beach games and sea sports are the main attractions.

 

Getting There

To get to Teluk Ramunia Beach head for Kota Tinggi town and travel for 47km then turn left near Petronas fuel station. From the junction travel for another 5km. At the first roundabout turn right (at 3 o?clock) and travel for 24km to reach Teluk Ramunia Beach.
