Visitors will be taken in by the lush green of tropical rainforests, the misty mountains, the serenity of the rural villages and the endless spread of the padi fields. Kedah is one of the best destination for those seeking retreat from urban living as its pristine environment is still intact despite the development taking place in the state.

 

Take a boat ride and explore the vast lake or just enjoy the sun. Play golf at one of the best designed golf course around. Also witness the honey gathering process conducted by local bee handlers. Watch how the experts retrieve honey from the 30 metres high Tualang tree in the wilderness of Pedu jungle. This activity is being held once a year i.e. in the month of February. GUNUNG JERAI (MOUNT JERAI) - Gurun

 

 

Standing at 1,220 m, the legendary Gunung Jerai is the main attraction of the Gunung Jerai Forest Reserve. On clear days, visitors to the summit can enjoy spectacular views of the valley below, including the nearby islands of Pulau Bunting, Pulau Songsong, Pulau Telur and Pulau Bidan. Gunung Jeral is accessible by a paved road. Alternatively, ardent climbers can take a two-hour trek to the top. Guide services are available at the Gunung Jerai Recreation Centre at the foothills. Gunung Jerai is situated about 2km from Gurun town or S km from the Gurun exit if travelling along the North-South Expressway. En route to the summit, drop by the Forestry Museum housed in a traditional Malay building for an insight into Malaysia?s flora and fauna.

 
 
 

SUNGAI MERBOK (MERBOK RIVER)  - Merbok

 

 

Sungai Merbok was once an important thoroughfare for traders stopping over at the Lembah Bujang (Bujang Valley) trading port during the latter's golden era from the 5th until the 13th centuries. In fact traders from China, India and the Middle East that had converged the Lembah Bujang port knew Kedah then as the Golden Peninsula. Sungai Merbok has truly left behind many exciting historical footprints that should be explored and researched to unearth its glorious heydays. Along the Sungai Merbok, the mangrove forest form a special attraction where 30 different species of mangrove vegetation exclusively found here. The 4,114 hectare forest is one of the largest mangrove forest reserves in Malaysia. There are also 80 different species of rare birds as well as fireflies that could be found along its river banks.

 
 
 

PEDU LAKE

 

 

Accessible by road about 45km from Kuala Nerang and 95km from Alor Star, this prime eco tourist retreat of natural rainforest surroundings boasts wide spectrum of flora and fauna. Even the chalets here are carefully blended in to take advantage of the serene and cool environment. Once a year in February, there is an opportunity to see how bee hunter gather wild honey. Other activities available here are fishing, jungle trekking, bird watching and adventure activities.

 
 
 

GUA GUNUNG KERIANG

 

The Gua Gunung Kenang located at Gunung Keriang, 8km from the Alor Star city This cave comprises a number of different caves namely Gua Terus (Straight Cave), Gua Pelamin (Daisshaped Cave), Gua Seribu Bayur and several unnamed smaller ones. The 600-metre long Gua Terus is about 100 metres above the Gunung Keriang recreational area. Several attractive limestone formations are visible in these caves. Visitors can use the hiking trek to reach the caves entrance as well as to its peak, where various flora and fauna such as shrubs, fichus, ferns, wild orchids, cacti and parasites, swallows and bats can be found.

 
 
 

BUKIT HIJAU RECREATIONAL FOREST - Baling

 

To appreciate nature in its purest form, make a trip to Kedah?s recreational forests. The Bukit Hijau Recreational Forest is the site of the Bukit Hijau Waterfalls. It features a scenic seven-tiered cascade which falls into seven crystal clear ponds. Facilities here include restaurants, camping ground, a botanical garden and a solitary resort with chalet-style accommodation. This recreational forest is situated in the district of Baling, about 45 km away from Sungai Petani and 54 km from Kulim town. Also situated in the Baling district, the Lata Bayu Waterfalls Isometimes referred to as Lata Asam Jawa) features a 20 m cascade that forms a pool known as Lubok Lesong. It is situated about 30 km from Baling town. Other recreational spots in the state include Junjung Waterfalls, Batu Hampar Recreational Forest, Peranginan Sik Recreational Forest and Lata Mengkuang Recreational Forest.
