THE PORING HOT SPRINGS

Poring is Kadazan/dusuns word for the bamboo species growing in the area

Poring is named after a giant bamboo species that is found in Kota Kinabalu and is naturally abundant at the Poring Hot Springs, Sabah. The hot springs were first discovered during the World War 2. At the time, it merely had pipes that channeled water into open-air Japanese style wooden baths. Since 1989, more bathing areas and facilities were added to make it an attractive tourist destination.

There are five hot springs here ranging in temperature from 49 to 60 degree Celsius. The water contains sulphur, which is said to have curative properties for certain skin ailments. Visitors can choose to dip themselves in either the indoor or outdoor tubs. Besides the hot springs, there are also swimming pools and waterfalls where one can enjoy refreshingly cold water.

The surrounding area is filled with beautiful greenery and visitors can view trees known as the giants of the rainforest, i.e. tualang trees, besides some tropical fruit trees.

The canopy walk, suspended some 30 metres above the forest floor and stretching for some 1 57 metres, is also worth a try, for those without a fear of heights, that is. Poring Hot Springs is located about 3 hours from Kota Kinabalu. It is managed by Sabah Parks, whereas the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges manages the accommodation as well as the food and beverage outlets.
