HISTORY & HERITAGE - Kota Tinggi

THE HISTORICAL KOTA TINGGI

Kota Tinggi is the largest district in Johor with a land area of 3,488 sq. km. It is often called the ?historical district? because of its importance as the seat of the Johor Sultanate. The promontories and sheltered river shores along Johor River were ideal for the establishment of settlements and defense forts against enemy invasion in the old days. Traces or remnants of such historical settlements are found at Johor Lama, Panchor, Bukit Seluyut, Kota Tinggi town and Sayong Pinang.

KOTA TINGGI HISTORICAL CENTRE

The Pusat Sejarah Kota Tinggi (historical centre) in town collects various historical artefacts and compiles historical information from various sources to give visitors a better understanding of the important role played by Kota Tinggi in the Johor Sultanate.

RULER'S TOMB

Kampung Makam, a village situated about 2km from Kota Tinggi, has remnants of walls and tombs of dignitaries. The walls are believed to be part of a palace or fort, known as Kota Tauhid. The presence of a ruler?s tomb, that of Sultan Mahmud, and the tombs of a treasurer and a general in Kampung Makam further reinforce the presence of a ruling settlement in this part of Kota Tinggi town.

JOHOR LAMA

Johor Lama is regarded as a significant settlement by the presence of a unique fortress here. Built of bunkers of huge solid rocks interposed with cannons on high ground, the importance of Johor Lama was thus beyond doubt. This is further supported by the naming of the present capital city of Johor state as Johor Bahru (new Johor), as ?Johor Lama? means old Johor. The Johor Lama Historical Complex sheds light on the Johor Lama Fort. Built on the land that used to be the Sultanate?s government centre, the historical complex is a replica of the Sultan?s palace.

The Johor Lama Historical Complex preserves the rich history of the fort and visitors will be thrilled to learn more about the place through an audio visual presentation and well-illustrated oil paintings depicting the events from 500 years ago.

KOTA TINGGI WATERFALL

This popular recreational centre boasts of scenic waterfalls that originate from Gunung Panti. The Kota Tinggi Waterfall Resort provides chalets and other facilities in the area.

DESARU BEACH

Desaru means a land of casuarinas and Desaru beach is one of the famous beaches in Kota Tinggi area. Besides the endless rows of casuarinas, Desaru Beach is famed for its long stretch (over 25 km) of pristine sandy beach facing the South China Sea. This advantage has attracted the establishment of six beach resorts, each offering different facilities. Visitors can enjoy activities that include swimming, picnicking, fishing, cycling, sea sports, and beach games as well as go-kart racing and golfing. What makes Desaru more popular is the availability of other attractions within a short drive. These include a fisherman museum, a firefly sanctuary, historical relics and fresh seafood.

TANJUNG BALAU FISHERMEN MUSEUM

Tanjung Balau is a planned fishing village located near the beach 70 km from Kota Tinggi town. Its Fishermen Museum displays various equipments used by the fishermen to support their livelihood, such as glass buoys and traps. The colourful and beautiful fishing boats exhibited in the compound of the museum are a testament to the artistic skill and craft ingenuity of the fishermen in the area.

JOHOR RIVER

Tourists flock to Kota Tinggi to have a close encounter with one of nature?s phenomenon ? the presence of fireflies in the thousands along the Johor River. The fascinating insects are found in abundance on the berembang trees that line the Johor River. The male and female insects engage in a unique mating ritual at night that results in a fascinating light show. It is also a common sight, especially in the evenings, to see groups of local residents by the riverbank catching tiger prawns which are abundant in the river. Some skill, patience and a little bit of luck goes into the activity as the shift in the water currents makes it challenging.
