KUALA GULA

BIRDING & MANGROVE SANCTUARY

From a distance, the pretty white speckles decorating the monotonous brown mudflats seem like stray cotton wool. As you get closer, the graceful movements from afar turn out to be scores of egrets. And they move about nonchalantly among thousands of uncommon types of birds from over 200 species. all busy feeding on morsels of sea creatures that hide in the shallow seabed. An ornithologist?s dream. birds from as far as Siberia visit this place annually and stay for weeks or even months.

Called the Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary and located in the Krian district, this is Malaysia?s premier stopover point for migrating birds? and it is among the most important feeding places for these annual visitors, coming in yearly from October to escape the harsh northern winter. Translated to English, Kuala Gula would literally mean Sugar Estuary but there is a simple answer to this unique name. The place itself and the mangrove forest enclose several river estuaries, the main being Sungai Gedong. and Sungai Krian. which is the second biggest and most important river in Perak. The area was once important for its sugarcane plantations. hence the name Gula. Today. there are no sugar plantations here. having been replaced by paddy and oil palm. Nevertheless, a visit to this charming place is indeed a sweet experience.

White Heron, and Egrets picking on little prey in the wet fields are common sights here.

MANGROVE GALORE

Kuala Gula is a place for true nature enthusiasts, bird watchers and those who appreciate the idyllic country life. The rhythm of the tides and the paths taken by swarms of migratory birds here dictate visitors? experiences The late afternoons when the sun is less fierce, allow birders to explore mudflats and part of the 40,000ha mangrove forests to admire the natural wealth of flora and fauna.

BIRD LIFE

Although visitors will see many birds from various species wondering about at the paddy fields near villages, the real birding spot is at the mudflats. which takes a 40-minute boat ride to get there Getting out of the boat into the fiats requires careful threading through mud with the help of wood boards.

Some of the rare species often seen here are the Greater Adjutant Storks, and Black Egret. The area thrives with Darters, Plovers, Bitterns. Raptors. Kingfishers. and Cranes as well as wild ducks, and Pelicans. The peak season to see the birds is from October through March. when birders descend upon Kuala Gula's shores and mudflats to witness the spectacle. Trek the mangrove forests and you will see many indigenous animal species such as Macaques. Silver-leaf monkeys. otters, water lizards. pythons. and mangrove snakes. Thousands of mudskippers and small. bright-red mud crabs crawl along the muddy shores while graceful Brahminy Kites perform aerial acrobatics high above. You may hire guides to assist you. who are mainly local residents trained by Perhilitan. They will take you to the best spots where you will be regaled by the sheer variety of migratory birds from as far as China, Japan. Russia. and Mongolia. This way. you get the best sightings of some of the 250.000 birds that live here during the peak migratory period, feeding upon tiny protein-rich crabs, crustaceans. planktons. and other sources of food that are abundant in these mudflats.
