SARAWAK - EAST MALAYSIA / MALAYSIA BORNEO

KUCHING : Nightlife

Sarawak is more than just a destination: it is an experience. And no where is this more apparent than in Kuching - the heart of Sarawak. With its leisurely pace, riverfront scene, ethnic crafts and curios, markets, and host of unforgettable eating and dining adventures, travellers will not leave this city disappointed. As far as nightlife is concerned, Kuching has a unique blend of local and foreign influences. Sarawak?s rich ethnic diversity, along with its assortment of international travellers from far and wide converge in this vibrant city looking for night-time entertainment, party, fun dining, and other kinds of unique local experiences.

The swift transition from heritage-related tourist landmarks during the day to its titillating night scene is something worth checking out. Although Kuching presents itself as a must visit destination, the true treasures are found within its historic streets. In the heart of Chinatown, along Jalan Padungan (Padungan Road), lie several coffee shops and restaurants that provide a perfect setting for those wishing to unwind. The Chinese shop houses here are mostly built in the 1920?s and 30?. A few of the buildings have been transformed into chic bars and restaurants mainly to cater to the workingclass Yuppie crowd. From corporate executives, students, tourists, expatriates, bohemians to the vogue, they come here to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

bing!

With a nostalgic setting of old shop houses in Padungan, offers an atmosphere that marries the classic and West. Its simple d?or appeals to its patrons who can sit for hours working on their laptops as the restaurant comes fully equipped with free Wifi. The caf?has set its mark as a hip and intimate establishment of Kuching?s caf? culture. There is a constant aroma of freshly roasted premium-quality illy coffee beans. bing!?s baristas have been trained not only to brew coffee professionally but also, to present it as an art form.

Ipanema

Another hot spot to unwind, relax, and have a drink. Here, the kitchen serves a good selection of Latin and Mediterranean inspired a-la carte dishes. Patrons looking for a place to have a nice banter with friends can opt for the stylish new wine bar with its wide range of drinks, snacks, and light meals.

Soho

The signboard perhaps dominates the whole street; Soho, one of Kuching?s most fashionable entertainment outlets has a very simple and earthy d?or and appeal more to the upmarket crowds. It plays jazz, Latin and dance-oriented music.

Grappa

Close to Soho is Grappa, it has a similar set up with slightly younger and mixed crowd. The music played at Grappa is a mix of House, 80?s and R&B.

Mojo@Denise

At Mojo@Denise, frequent live performances by young and talented musicians take place nightly. Its cosy lounge frequently features events such as live music evenings, and poetry readings. The outlet claims to have Kuching?s best-kept secrets, showcasing local and visiting singer and songwriters in a casual, ?living-room? style performance. It welcomes new and old talent, as well as non-professional songwriters to entertain patrons.

The Office

The first thing that may come to ones mind, upon seeing the name The Office is the popular TV sitcom. The outlet is another place where you can mingle with the ?in? crowd. If you are not ready to call it a night and decide to check out a different scene in Kuching, take a short drive to Travillion in Jalan Petanak, which is just after Jalan Padungan. Travillion is similar to Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur. Located here are many newer bars that cater to the young crowd. Unlike Padungan, Travillion is relatively new to the night owls of Kuching. Rows of trendy bars, lounges and restaurants as well as boutiques and bookshop are available here.

BarZing!

A popular place to go for drinks and ease those office kinks.

Others

If you prefer to go retro for the night, then Amoebar is a good chill out lounge to be seen at. Other bars and lounges that you can check out are Minoshe, Zen, a blue bistro and pub called Le Rendezvous, City Jungle, a music caf? Oregano and Frappe.

There are a few other entertainment outlets around the city that you may want to visit. The Junk at Wayang Street exudes rustic Chinese ambience with Italian influenced cooking. The Living Room is decorated with Iban and Balinese theme. Here, patrons can relax outside in the ?longhouse? area where you can lie on comfortable cushions and gaze at the night sky while sipping Mojitos. The Living Room is just a few shops away from Bla Bla Bla, a restaurant with a mix of interesting Chinese and fusion dishes.

Kuching Waterfront still remains as ?the? place to be seen. It offers excellent views of the Astana, Fort Margherita and the Malay kampungs, which line the north bank of the river during daytime. At night, its vibrant scene where people from all mix can be seen sauntering here while young artists vie for their attention. Its not called ?The People?s Place? for nothing.
