SERIAN

A small market town about 1 hour from Kuching. Tour groups heading for the Skrang, Lemanak and Batang Ai areas often stop here. The main attraction is an excellent farmers? market selling all manner of fruit, vegetables and forest produce, and a thriving fish market. If you are lucky you will also see sago worms, a favourite local delicacy, offered for sale.

GIANT durian, on top of an equally huge durian tree stump, greets visitors to Serian. It is not surprising though as the fruit is the symbol of the town, which is famous for its fleshy and succulent durian. But Serian is more than just that. Its prosperity and uniqueness lies in it being a stopover for visitors from Kuching and other towns in the state. Hundreds of travellers, including foreign tourists, stop by at the town daily, either for meals or for rest. Among the daily visitors are those heading to the orang utan sanctuary in Batang Ai or longhouses in the Lubok Antu district. Just 65km from Kuching, Serian is strategically located on the 1,200km-long main trunk road that stretches from Sematan in the south to Limbang in the north. Its central location has turned Serian into an ideal meeting point for travellers, including those from West Kalimantan who entered the state from the border town of Tebedu.

?The town has benefited much from the tourism business,? says a shop owner, Yong. Due to the influx of travellers, the Serian vegetable market has also become a tourist destination. Wild and farm vegetables and fruits are aplenty at the market, with villagers from the nearby longhouses plying their wares. Serian district has about 200 villages with a population of 100,000, with the majority of them Bidayuh, Chinese and Malays. Apart from modern buildings, wood and semiconcrete structures in Serian gives the town its own distinctive look. For recreation, some recommended spots in town are Taman Danu Serian, the Serian mini town square and the children recreational park.

Another popular attraction is the Ranchan waterfall, one of the many waterfalls that can be found in the district. Apart from Ranchan, which is about 5km from the town and easily accessible by road, another popular spot is the Simuja waterfall, which is 7km away. Serian has many interesting locations. A must-visit are the unique longhouses found in many villages in the district. Serian is listed as among the cleanest and most beautiful towns in Sarawak. It once grabbed the top spot in the recreation and parks category of the national landscaping competition, improving on its standing the year before when it emerged second.

BAU

A 19th century gold rush put Bau on the map. Small-scale mining continues, but nowadays Bau is a market town and administrative centre, about 60 km from Kuching. There are some interesting caves around Bau. The Wind Cave - a collection of small passageways - is a popular local picnic spot. The Fairy Cave is larger and more impressive - there is a small Chinese shrine in the main chamber and varied vegetation at the entrance. A flashlight is essential to explore the rock formations within. Travel agents can arrange trips, or there are frequent buses to Bau. From the town, take a taxi or hitch-hike (usually quite easy). The Bau area, with its jungle streams and interesting limestone scenery, is a great location for kayaking. Kuching Kayak offers a number of kayaking tours in the Bau District (see Sports & Recreation section for further details).

If you are in Sarawak during June, it is well worth travelling to the Bau area to witness Gawai Padi (or Gawai Sawa?a), the culmination of a remarkable shamanistic ritual where the Bidayuh community give thanks to the Rice Goddess for an abundant harvest. Each village has its own ritual, complete with shamen, priestesses, trance dancers, musicians, and of course an all-night street party.

MATANG FAMILY PARK

A popular recreation and picnic spot situated at the foothills of Mount Serapi about 25 km from Kuching. There are picnic areas, a children?s playground, jungle tracks and a crystal clear mountain stream which is ideal for swimming. Entrance fee RM 3. There is no bus service from Kuching. Local mini-buses (bas sewa) depart from the alleyway next to the Saujana car park.

MALESIANA TROPICALS

Specialised in the artificial propagation of rare tropical plants such as pitcher plants and orchids. Their nursery is located 45 minutes from Kuching and is open to visitors but only by prior arrangement.

KAMPUNG PANCHOR DAYAK HOT SPRINGS

Accessible from the Kuching - Serian Road, just after the small town of Tapah, via a rural road and gravel track. Around 48 km from Kuching, the spring is managed by the local community who have developed basic infrastructure including boardwalks and changing rooms. Open at weekends, admission is RM 3 for adults and free for children.
