SPA RETREATS

Remedies To Rejuvenate

Sarawak with year-round warm weather, ample rain and good soils, is blessed with many tropical plants, herbs and spices ? many used for rejuvenation with amazing results. Gingers and peppermints. Coconuts and flowers. These, and a myriad of other herbs and spices, are the most commonly used ingredients in spa treatments in Sarawak. Apart from healing and restoring when consumed, the various herbal products blended with minerals are also said to bring beneficial effects for the skin, blood circulation and for healing when applied to the body through a massage.

Sarawak traditional massage has long been advocated for its benefits and is now applied as part of the treatments available in modern spas. Yielding the desired results to unwind, refresh and reinvigorate, many spas in Kuching and its vicinity offer irresistible packages that combine modern and traditional treatments. Ginger is used to recharge the system and said to have properties for removing wind from the body and boosting blood circulation. This rhizome is also claimed by age-old traditional medicinal practitioners to possess antiseptic values. Ginger oil is used for stimulating the reflexology points when applied with a massage.

Only one ml of ginger oil can be extracted from 100kg of ginger. Besides ginger, milk, wine and salt are also used to bring out a natural, healthier look. When you look good, you feel good, therefore only the best quality spa ingredients are favoured. At the Sarakraf Pavilion, a ginger garden produces fresh high quality rhizomes. A popular spa among locals and visitors, the centre provides treatments in the airy open or in aromatic cool rooms. One of its signature packages is the Tribal Remedy that makes you want to stay on longer and enjoy every moment of being pampered.

Treatments available include traditional shoulder massages using ginger oil and herbal concoction, professional beauty treatments, slimming treatments, nail manicure and pedicure services, red wine spa, tapai (local rice wine) spa, fruit bath and a long list of other spa treatments to choose from.

Another place that offers healing traditional massages, foot reflexology, aromatherapy, organic facial and body scrub, is the Borneo Highlands Resort. Here too, the spa uses a lot of natural ingredients including spices and coconut oil that is laced with seven secret herbs. The concoction is a traditional oil of the Bidayuh tribe and it is used on the skin as well as hair. It is said to cleanse the body and tone muscles, even for women after childbirth. Flowers, cucumbers, local white turnips and Aloe Vera from the resort?s own nursery along with milk, is used in treatments. The serene surroundings make a spa experience here even more memorable. The Essential Touch spa?s mood and d?or is more modern with bright coloured curtains and contemporary lights.

Yet, the traditional touch in ingredients and treatments is always the signature. There are many different flowers used for various ailments. Cedar wood is for relaxation and easing bronchitis, coughs and catarrh (its a discharge or mucus blockage caused by swelling of mucous membranes). It also said to treat urinary tract infections and Getting There Tribal Remedy is located at Chonglin Park, Jalan Tabuan, close to Sarakraf Pavilion.
