RECREATION & SPORTS

LABUAN INTERNATIONAL SEA SPORTS COMPLEX

Labuan International Sea Sports Complex is located at the waterfront area along Jalan Tanjung Purun. It is within close proximity to Labuan town center. The complex covers an area of 5.91 acres. It was a project under the 7th Malaysia plan and built at a total cost of RM25 million. Labuan International Sea Sports Complex is part of the Labuan waterfront beautification project.

Its objective is to create a world-class water sports center and to develop more attractive places of interests in line with the vision of the former Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad to turn Labuan into a major island destination in Malaysia. The complex offers ample facilities to host various events. It was opened to the public in June 2001 when it hosted the yearly Labuan International Sea Challenge (LISC), one of the international events held in conjunction with the annual Malaysia Water Festival. The improved infrastructure and facilities provided by this complex is expected to enhance Labuan?s appeal to attract more tourists and investors.

The modern amenities enabled the island to host more international sea sports events and championships. The Labuan International Sea Sports Complex is designed with three prominent structures connected to a main viewing plaza. Every building houses a specific activity. Each of these imposing towers is an integral part of a large modern water sports complex. The architecture offers a dramatic expression of nature, tradition and modern functionality. The complex houses the main sea sports centre, an administrative block, a marine biology museum, souvenir shops and eateries.

DINGHY SAILING

The marine park is sheltered from rough seas but with a good constant offshore wind which is perfect for dinghy sailing. There are plenty of sailing opportunities both for novices and advance sailors.

JET SKI

Also known as personal water craft (PWC), jet-skis are fast gaining popularity. Jet-ski tours are organised by various tour operators and can last up to 3 hours. They pass along the Menumbok River as well as circle around Labuan island. There is also the Annual Jet Ski Challenge and other privately organised races. Crafts may be rented by the hour from the Labuan Water Sports Centre.

SNORKELING

The clear waters and colourful coral reefs off the island make for fantastic snorkeling. Brightly- coloured fishes dart through the living underwater garden and snorkelers will be mesmerised by the ever-changing scenery in front of them. Snorkeling gear may be hired from hotel leisure centres.

ECO DIVING

The marine park situated 2 kilometers off the southern coast of Labuan main island is an eco-diving and snorkeling haven. The three secluded islets are surrounded by fringing coral reefs which make it a veritable snorkellers paradise. Snorkellers can enjoy the reefs everywhere. Sign up for a course of instruction or take part In one of the park?s guided snorkeling excursions. Learn about the wonderful creatures you will be visiting on your next snorkel trip.   The park boasts some of the best developed coral reefs in the South China Sea. There are more than 20 spectacular dive sites. Reel thrashers stay home - Labuan marine park is for eco-divers only.
