LANGKAWI : KEDAH - NORTHERN REGION OF PENINSULAR MALAYSIA

PLACES OF INTEREST : Langkawi Cable Car

One of the most highly recommended attractions in Pulau Langkawi, the Langkawi Cable Car ride is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

For those who dare to bras it, get ready for a truly out-of- this world experience. Why, you would get the feel of an incline of 42 degrees and a breathtaking view of the surrounding green forests. And you can even see as far as southern Thailand. Langkawi Cable Car is located on the southwest coast of the main island, just 30 minutes from Kuah town and only 15 minute from Langkawi International Airport.  The clear bubble-shaped cable car takes a 2.2km ride up to Gunung Mat Chincang, which at 706 metres is Langkawi's second highest peak

The base station of the cable car line is conveniently located within a themed shopping centre called Oriental Village. The journey up the cool mountain is an experience in belt. The cable car journey is completed in two parts. From the base station the cable car ascends past two towers to the middle station. Here, along the near vertical climb, tourists are offered views of the towering cliff face called the Matahari Face. These geological features are believed to have formed some 550 million years ago making it one of the oldest parts of Malaysia.

Rest assured that on the way up (which takes about 10 minutes), you will enjoy the breathtaking sights of the forest below, Pantai Kok behind you, Seven Wells Waterfalls on your right and the sky before you. At the middle station, having climbed 650 meters (about 2,150 feet) up from sea level, you can alight from the car to take in the view, or stay in the gondola while it makes a nearly 90-degree turn to head up to the top station. If you decide to step off, you may catch another gondola going up to the top station.

A walking trek on a suspension bridge from station one, uphill to station two allows visitors a refreshing walk above the forest.  The view from the top includes that of station one as well as the forested northeastern side of the island and, in the distance, the Tarutao National Park in southern Thailand. There is a small snack bar at the top station, which has a rather space-age look with its round viewing platforms. From here you can walk to the peak of Gunung Mat Chincang where there is a 360-degree viewing deck for more spectacular vistas. One interesting fact about the Langkawi Cable Car is that the cable car was built without constructing any road through the jungle and all the materials used were lifted into place by helicopters.
