DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Langkawi is indeed a culinary paradise.  The island's many dining outlets, from simple street stalls to fine dining restaurants, present an irresistible culinary adventure.

The diverse ethnic influences have shaped Langkawi?s culinary tradition, creating a sumptuous melting pot of Malay, Indian, Chinese and Thai dishes, often spicy and aromatic with Asian herbs. The island?s emergence as an international tourist magnet has encouraged entrepreneurs to invest in a string of restaurants serving fine Western food. With fresh ingredients from the sea readily available, seafood restaurants are plentiful. For a difference, try the ?local street food available after dark in Kuah and the Cenang Beach tourist belt. Specialties are the spicy Laksa Kedah (noodles in hot curry), satay (barbecued chicken, beef, or lamb usually, served with rice cake called ketupat, onion, cucumber and delicious peanut and chili sauce) and sup ekor (spicy, herbal mutton soup).

ACCOMMODATION

The major resorts offer comprehensive facilities for dining, sports, health spa and gym, travel arrangements and recreation. Interestingly, some of the resorts have replicated the traditional kampung ambience with their wooden chalets and suites evoking a rustic feel but providing modern amenities. The interest of backpackers has also been carefully considered. There is a wide choice of affordable budget hotels and resorts spread out over the island. Facilities are basic but adequate for a comfortable, safe stay. Tourism development in Langkawi has been planned with due consideration for the preservation of the environment. Resorts and other tourist attractions have been constructed with the minimal cutting of hills and removal of forest plants so as to protect the fragile ecosystem. It is not uncommon to find small forest creatures moving about the foliage garden resorts.

There is? a wide range of accommodation style to suit every budget and taste, from clean budget hotels to award-winning world-class 5-Star resort.
