ABOUT LANGKAWI ISLAND

Langkawi Geopark : Worlds first duty free Geopark - Pulau Langkawi Island

Langkawi, which has been nicknamed as the ?Caribbean of The East?, is a cluster of isles basking languidly in glistening waters.

Not many island resorts in the region can boast of such pearls of exotic beauty but Langkawi is an enchantingly white stretches of palm-fringed beaches. It had often been said that many locations within the group of 99 islands make idle settings for a romance novel or swashbuckling movie. It is hard to imagine that only a decade ago Langkawi is a cluster of fishing villages surrounded by coconut trees, but this is something the visitors must see for themselves. To sum it all, Langkawi is a reclusive retreat for the tired and beaten down corporate executive, an island resort for the entire family, a romantic escapade for honeymooners, a haven for water sports enthusiasts and a sanctuary for sun worshippers. Or in other words - a haven to blend into just for the fun of it all. Situated at the crossroads of the Thai- Malaysian border, within the Straits of Malacca and the Andaman Sea, Pulau Langkawi is renowned for their legends. Its limestone hills and caves, rustic villages and scenic padi fields, abundant flora and fauna, as well as its enthralling legends make the island a truly idyllic tropical paradise.

Pulau Langkawi Island : Kedah - Peninsular Malaysia

Langkawi's island is also home to people renowned for their gentle smiles and warm hospitality.

An enchanting holiday destination to all who explore its many attractions, Pulau Langkawi provides vacationers a variety of activities for water sports around crystal clear waters, jungle treks through rich tropical forests, quiet strolls through quaint fishing villages, rounds of golf on an 18-hole course and duty-free shopping opportunities. The entire island is most fascinating and its treasures beg to be explored. With a geological history dating back 500-million odd years, the islands contain unique rock formations that stir the imagination and baffle the mind. Numerous caves, with their stunning stalactites and stalagmites, taunt the adventurous to unravel their ancient secrets.

LANGKAWI BECKONS

Sparsely populated with an unburied pace, Langkawi's is an ideal tropical retreats.

Historically being located along the traditional spice route, Langkawi attracted seafarers and traders from far and near.  The earliest references date back to charts of the 15th century.  This includes documents of renowned seafarer Admiral Cheng Ho from chine who visited Malacca in 1405.  Pepper and rice were the main produce of Langkawi then.  The French General Augustin De Beaulieu, in the service of King Louise XIV of France, arrived in Langkawi in 1621 to trade in pepper. As Penang, Malacca, Singapore and Bencoolen became significant trading posts for spices, Langkawi?s prominence decreased. Only in recent times, when the Government began to focus on Langkawi?s development as a top international tourist destination, did it grow in popularity.

Langkawi Tropical Retreats

In Langkawi there is time to stand and stare, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is also space, uncluttered and pristine, for a visitor to. be one with nature. Buffaloes stiff wallow lazily in muddy rice fields against a backdrop of forested hills while farmers tend their crops in traditional ways. With family or with friends, Langkawi provides a different and delightful break.

Quaint fishing villages and resorts built on stilts in the sea are captivating sights in Langkawi.
