MARINAS & YACHT CLUBS - Selangor

ROYAL SELANGOR YACHT CLUB

The Royal Selangor Yacht Club is the nearest yacht club to Kuala Lumpur and is situated in Port Klang where cruise liners and merchant vessels share the waterways. It is the host club for the prestigious Raja Muda International Regatta, which is annually contested local and International yachts each November.

Port Kiang?s proximity to Malaysia?s capital, Kuala Lumpur and its inevitable commercial significance has seen it develop as an important port. RSYC is one of the most welcoming yacht clubs in the region for cruising yachters. Visitors are granted temporary membership up to a maximum of three months annually. It is also Malaysia?s oldest yacht club and was first registered as the Port Swettenham Yacht Club in 1969. The open-sided clubhouse is large and breezy and includes an adjoining pool, gym and recreational facilities. Communications including Internet, e-mail and phone/fax can be made here while the Post Office is nearby. Yachts in transit may use the club for stores delivery and as a mailing address. The club also provides 24-hour security for the moorings. Facilities like Customs, Immigration and port clearance are within walking distance of the club. A train station is within walking distance (trains take 45 minutes to reach Kuala Lumpur) or alternatively, taxis are available. The club operates a slipway where small to medium-sized boats can be accommodated.

Ship chandlery facilities are limited, but good engineering and hardware supplies are available nearby. Other services include canvas and sail repairs, galvanising and bottled gas. Both North and South Klang Straits are well-lit and buoyed but yachters should be cautious, as the Straits of Malacca are busy shipping lanes. Swinging moorings off the club are recommended as tides can exceed 5m. and four knots. RSYC conducts training courses including Competent Crew and Yacht Master. Optimist dingy courses are also offered while state and national sailing teams train in the waters adjacent to the club. Keelboat races are conducted from February to October and social flotillas are organised to neighbouring ports, islands and anchorages. The Raja Muda International Regatta (RMIR). held annually at the end of November, is hosted by the club. It is a world-class event that includes one of the three regattas that constitute the Southeast Asian Perpetual Cup Series.
