STAYING IN A

RUNGUS LONGHOUSE

KAMPUNG BAVANGGAZO

Kudat District

Visitors who are interested in experiencing a stay in a traditional Rungus Longhouse without sacrificing modern comforts such as showers and toilets will find what they are looking for at Kampung Bavanggazo, located in a valley not far from the main road to Kudat near Tinangol. Bavanggazo has two purpose-built longhouses constructed entirely of traditional materials including rough hewn wood, split bamboo and beaten bark. The longhouses offer comfortable twin- bedrooms off a breezy communal verandah, where meals of local food are enjoyed and cultural performances given. Visitors can join in with the dances, or try their hand at playing the gongs.

It is possible to see the women weaving or doing beadwork, and to buy the results at a small handicraft shop nearby. Run as a community project, the Bavanggazo longhouses can be visited on a day trip, but for better flavours of local life, including a meal of traditional food and an evening of dance and music, it is preferable to stay the night.

An alternative to a traditional longhouse is offered at Kampung Minyak, 26 km south of Kudat. Around 35 Rungus families living in modern houses participate in the Misompuru Homestay programme, offering hospitality to visitors interested in a taste of genuine Rungus lifestyle and daily activities. Not far from the village, a boardwalk above a mangrove swamp leads to the three small pools where oil seeps up from underground, giving rise to the name Kampung Minyak or Oil village. Known to the Rungus for generations and revered as a sacred site, these wells do not produce sufficient oil to for commercial exploitation. A boat trip through the mangrove forest, swimming at nearby Terongkongan beach, exploring a cave in the headland, trekking, gathering wild food, joining in cultural dances, fishing or visiting traditional longhouses and villages are just some of the many activities that can be on the homestay programme.
