TANJUNG PIAI

JOHOR NATIONAL PARK

Realms where endless spectacles unfold... At the southernmost tip of mainland Asia, in the district of Pontian, Johor, lies a veritable ecological haven.

This is a place where the earth and sea, plant and animal life, live in harmonious proximity. It is an enduring wilderness, a world of colours, contrast and co-existence. Tanjung Piai Johor National Park covers an area of over 926ha, 526ha of which are coastal mangroves. Its 8km shoreline borders the Straits of Malacca. If you work your way southwards on a map of Asia, you will eventually come down Peninsular Malaysia and finally end in Tanjung Piai. Hence the moniker - The Southernmost Tip of Mainland Asia.  The exact coordinates of this unique geographical spot is 1o16.00? North; 1 03o 30.46? East.

Indeed Serkat, the mukim in which Tanjung Piai is located, derives its name from the Malay word ?Serkat?, which literally means ?block off?. This was the ancients? way of referring to land?s end. The park shelters an extraordinary array of flora and fauna.  The forest provides a facade that is at once austere and luxuriant. More than 20 true species of mangrove and 9 mangrove - associated species thrive here.  The trees are alive with the sound of the gregarious Long-tailed Macaque. The more languid Dusky leaf Monkey prefers to remain in the background. Squadrons of seabirds share the coastal airspace. Many will stop over to rest and re-fuel, before resuming their incredible migration across the East Asian Flyway.  As the waters swell and subside with the tides, they leave behind an expanse of mudflats that are teeming with life - crabs, cockles, lizards and that unique terrestrial creature - the mudskipper, abound! Looming in the distance, out at sea, the traditional fishermen?s boats are dwarfed by the modern supertanker - a phenomenal sight and a humble reminder that you are standing at the edge of the world?s busiest waterway.

In Mainland Asia?s southernmost mangrove park, the only constant is change.  The Johor National Park Corporation is committed to preserving this extraordinary legacy.
