TAPAH

LUSH HILLS & RUSHING RAPIDS

It?s a small town but an important centre for some of the most interesting eco-visits and expeditions in the country.

Tapah is a serene looking town about 60km south of lpoh and its also one of the two administrative centres for the vast Batang Padang district. The other is Tanjung Malim, some 90km further south. The town itself is not exactly a tourist puller but the places surrounding Tapah are great eco-destinations. This town is the traditional gateway to the lovely hill retreat called Cameron Highlands, which is administered by Pahang state - some 60km of winding road up in the mountains that are not to far from here. Tapah is the main town located closest to some of the best recreational forests, and parks in the state, namely Kuala Woh, and Lata Kinjang.

There are also numerous Orang Asli villages in their original form, close to the town in the foothills of the nearby Titiwangsa Range. The main trunk Federal Route 1 road passes through Tapah and both sides of the road here are lined with grocery stores, fruit stalls, restaurants, several banks, and other small retail outlets. Travellers passing through the town often stop to get some local products and the place gets busy during the local fruit seasons, when fruit sellers line both sides of the road, tempting passers by with local favourites such as durians, and mangosteens.

Sometimes, you will be able to chance upon jungle herbs and vegetables for sale, collected from nearby forests and sold here by the Orang Asli people. One of the most common and popular jungle produce here is the Peta a pungent bean that is the seed of huge trees growing wild in the rainforest Its a delicacy in Malaysia and eaten raw or cooked with Sambal (chilly paste fried with dried prawns, anchovies, or prawn paste).

Another product harvested from the jungle is bamboo shoots. The lower hill slopes near Tapah are heavily forested with bamboo clumps, which grow thick here alter the land has been cleared by loggers, or through slash and burn farming practices. Apart from the shoots, matured stems are also collected by the Orang Asli and sold to factories producing bamboo basket and furniture. There is also another main street with more shops and a market Its a small town that is busy with life and activities in the day but everything seems to come to a crawl alter nightfall.

Out of Tapah and not far away, apart from the interesting forest recreational places of Kuala Woh, and Lata Kinjang, the magnificent Lata Iskandar cool cascades can be reached on your way up the winding Jalan Tapah - Cameron Highlands. The road is also doffed here and there with Orang Asli settlements and it will be an interesting affair to pay them a visit-with the aid of a guide of course.

The hills nearby here also offer some of the best opportunities for insect collecting. Sometimes, the children of the Orang Asli community can be seen selling their catch by the roadside, with very exotic looking creatures in plastic bags, up for sale. Insect trading seem to be big business as many of the younger generation here are involved in catching and selling insects. One easy spot to find these insects on sale is at the junction of the Kuala Recreational Park at the 13th km of the Jalan Tapah-Cameron Highlands and near a sundry shop at the 30th km of the Jalan Tapah-Cameron Highlands.
