SHOPPING AT

WANG KELIAN SUNDAY MARKET

A shopping browsing through the variety of items for sale at the Wang Kelian Sunday market in Perlis is a fun-filled excursion, not only from great bargains but also the scenic view along the way.

Tucked at the foot of a hill, this idyllic hamlet at the Malaysia-Thailand border is famed for its food, household goods, clothes and enchanting hillside scenery. The 40-minute journey on the trunk road from Kangar, about 45km away, cuts through padi fields, villages and rubber estates. But it is the final 20 minutes that will take one?s breath away, as the winding road goes first uphill and downhill along the edge of the state park. Those who often travel to Genting Highlands will notice a similarity, albeit lighter traffic. There is a lookout point midway that allows visitors to savour the view of padi fields, forests and limestone hills.

Kampung Wang Kelian itself is a tiny village of a few hundred families. There is a petrol station, a police station and food stalls but the main draw is the Sunday market, which begins at 7am and goes on until after lunchtime. While the early morning shoppers stock up on rice, fruits and vegetables, the late morning and afternoon crowd hunt for household items, clothes and dry foodstuff. The setting is simple with rows of wooden and zinc roofed stalls lining both sides of the road leading up to the border post. With a passport or a border pass, one can also hop over to the Thai side of the market. There is a mind-boggling array of household goods for sale, such as cushion covers, comforters, towels and mats. Among the favourites of bargain hunters are the floral motif comforters, cheap cooking stoves and deep fried anchovies.

The latter, prepared with chilies and spices, is sold for between RM15 and RM25, depending on the weight. King-sized comforters are being sold for between RM25 and RM30 each while the small stoves are sold for between RM48 and RM100 each. Shoppers can also get hold of baju melayu, baju kurung and T-shirts at bargain prices. Shoppers continue to make a bee-line to the market although some traders feel there has been a slight drop in business after the ?free-flow? ruling was scrapped in February.
