Langkawi in the far northwest of the peninsula is one of Malaysia's premier island destinations with many alluring qualities that appeal to sun seekers and nature lovers. While Langkawi is a 99-island archipelago, many tourists only visit the main island also known as Langkawi.   The archipelago's natural charm is evident as only three islands in the group are settled with the remainder blanketed in untouched forests. Langkawi has quickly made it mark as a world-class destination promoted as an exotic and alluring island group where tourists can enjoy undisturbed natural surroundings, beautiful beaches, limestone caves, extensive mangroves, peaceful evenings and its fascinating culture. Nearby, Pulau Payar Marine Park is popular for diving and snorkeling.  It is a mystical island rich in folklore but adventurous tourist are now discovering its many natural attractions.

Most of this mythology relates to several scenic areas that are leading tourist attractions.  One such location is the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden located on Dayang Bunting Island.  The suspended freshwater lake is one of the distinguishing features of the limestone topography found in much of northern Malaysia.

Langkawi's water are perfect for sailing as distances between the islands are short, waters are warm, winds are favourable and there are many quiet sandy bays for mooring, swimming and picnicking.  The islands also offer sailing in sheltered inlets as well as an open seas.  Because the favourable winds sailing is best from November to April.  Recent developments, marina expansions and the establishment of a boat repair, servicing and building industry have further advanced the island as a sailing destination.
